1948: Indian Army annexes princely state of Hyderabad, comprising several regions including Telangana.
November 1, 1956: Telangana merged with Andhra State, carved out of Madras State, to form Andhra Pradesh, a united Telugu-speaking state.
1969: ‘Jai Telangana’ movement launched demanding a separate state: over 300 people killed in police firing.
2001: K. Chandrasekhara Rao floats Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to revive Telangana demand.
2004: Congress-led central alliance backs Telangana demand in manifesto.
2008: Telugu Desam Party supports Telangana.
October 2009: Rao begins fast-unto-death for Telangana state.
December 9: Centre announces decision to create Telangana state.
December 23: Protests in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions (Seemandhra), and en masse resignations of MPs and state legislators; New Delhi puts process on hold.
February 3, 2010: Centre set up five-member Srikrishna committee to look into issue.
December 2010: Srikrishna committee submits its report, suggested six options
October 3, 2013: Union cabinet okays proposal to divide AP.
December 5, 2013: Cabinet approves draft Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2013, sends it to President Pranab Mukherjee.
December 16, 2013: Bill introduced in both houses of state legislature amid clashes between Seemandhra and Telangana lawmakers.
January 30, 2014: Both houses reject the bill by voice vote.
February 7, 2014: Union cabinet clears bill, rejects Seemandhra leaders’ demand to make Hyderabad a union territory.
February 18, 2014: Lok Sabha passes Telangana bill
February 19, 2014: Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy resigns as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.
February 20, 2014: Rajya Sabha passes bill.
March 1, 2014: President Pranab Mukherjee gives assent to Telangana bill. President’s rule imposed in the state.
April 30, 2014: Simultaneous elections held to 119-member Telangana assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats (along with residual Andhra).
May 16, 2014: TRS comes to power winning 63 seats in the assembly.
June 2, 2014: Telangana is born as new state. Rao takes oath as first chief minister.IANS
